North Texas Informix Users Group (NTIUG) Meeting, Wednesday, June 14
Posted in 2000
Hear ye! Hear ye! Attention to all of the lost souls who have been yearning to attend an INFORMIX Users Group meeting but did not know when the next one was going to be held. There WILL be a meeting THIS month, at the Dave & Busters located off of I-35 at the Walnut Hill exit. The meeting time will be from 6:30 PM through 9:30 PM. I would like to apologize for the lack of a meeting in March. The details as to why are both personal and professional; needless to say, I will try to prevent my problems from causing the group any missed meetings in the future. Several people have come forth to volunteer their time to assist me in the planning of an agenda and obtaining the needed speakers and place to meet, shall I find myself in need again. To them, I offer my thanks. Quite a few things have happened since the last meeting. Informix has bought another company: Ardent. Several speakers will be present to discuss Ardent's products and how Informix will meld them into their products and how these products benefit the Informix user community. Another speaker will be Maury Tiller. Several of you may know him as the ON-Bar Guru of Informix. He recently left Informix to join Network Appliance. He will be giving give a presentation on the benifits of implementing ON-Bar in conjunction with a product from his company. He has told me that you can create instant backups of your database without doubling the number of disks you need. A physical restore from one of these snap shots takes only about 120 seconds. To take Maury away from Informix, the product has to be something else. I know I am looking forward to hearing about this product, since my company is in the process of implementing ON-Bar within a Informix / SAP environment. If time allows, there may be some "suprized" speakers who I will avail upon to speak with us or, at least, ask them to make themselves available to answer any questions on any issue (performance, how-to, etc) you may need answers. Dallas is also home to two authors of Informix Press and/or Prentice Hall database manuals. If they appear at the meeting, I will most certainly introduce them to you. Yes, I do plan on asking them to speak at a meeting in the near future. Some people has emailed me with the request that we start up a mailing list alias that we can use to ask questions of each other, share shell scripts, share experiences, etc. You will not be automatically subscribed if we decide to obtain the alias. Please drop me a line if this is something that interests you. I have also received requests from some of you to distribute leaflets, freebies, etc to the membership. I will be more than happy to bring all that is sent to me to the meetings and place in a central location for those that wish to pertake of the goodies. If someone from your organization will be present, it would save my back if your staff were to bring the items themselves to the meeting. My mailing address is: Clifton M. Bean BancTec 14240 Midway Road Dallas, TX 75244 Please mark the package accordingly so I will know what it is and for whom. For those items in limited supply, some sort of contest will be devised :) Please distribute this email to any and all people you feel might be interested in attending. If you know of others who would like to receive this email direct, please let me know and I will add them to the list. (Email addresses are never revealed to others!). If you received this email but no longer desire to, please let me know and I will remove you from the distribution list. Please let me know how many people from your organization or team will be attending so I can alert the D&B staff on how much finger food to prepare. This mailing is being sent to over 100 people (via the mailing list alone!); I would love to be able to tell them at least half that number will be attending. Take care. Clifton Bean President, NTIUG
