IDS 10.x on HP 11.23
Posted in 2007
A user upgrading to IDS 10.x asked whether the PA-RISC build of IDS for HP-UX 11.23 would also run on Itanium, given vendor claims of binary compatibility. The consensus answer: no. PA-RISC binaries run on Itanium only under the 'aries' emulator, which is slow and unreliable for multithreaded apps like IDS — reports of the engine hanging before reaching online state, failing installs, and risk of database damage; PA-RISC and Itanium objects/libraries (UDRs, DataBlades, CSDK) can't be mixed. Recommended approach is to install the native build on each architecture (same version/patch level, 9.40+ 64-bit), after which the database can be moved between machines by switching disks/SAN volumes, which several posters had done successfully, including under MC/ServiceGuard.

We are upgrading to IDS 10.x - whatever the latest version is, as well as upgrading our OS to HPUX 11.23 on PA RISC. We have been told by our vendor that HPUX 11.23 is binary compatible between PA RISC and ITANIUM so supposedly our software will run on both. Does anybody have experience on whether the version of IDS ported for 11.23 on PA RISC will also work on 11.23 on ITANIUM? Comments in general about claims of compatibility between PA RISC and ITANIUM?

we run IDS 10.0 fc4 on HP-UX 11.23 on ITANIUM. We first installed without knowing the PA-RISC version and definitely it failed. It is possible to install but broke down suddenly. Even or provider did not know the difference. Kind regards R. Hegewald
We are toying around with the idea of a poor mans HA solution. This is our idea: Itanium is primary and PA-RISC is secondary only we don't use HDR. Volume groups are visible to both servers. If primary goes down we could bring the instance up on secondary. Will the data be readable and writable on the PA-RISC server? ----- Original Message ---- From: Wiesiek Glod <wkg@x2.pl> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Monday, March 26, 2007 4:54:41 PM Subject: Re: IDS 10.x on HP 11.23 [8730] Hi, On Mon, 2007-03-26 at 15:41 -0500, ANTHONY JUDISH wrote: > We are upgrading to IDS 10.x - whatever the latest version is, as well as > upgrading our OS to HPUX 11.23 on PA RISC. Hiiii, PA-RISC binaries "can" run on HP-UX 11.23 on Itanium. But, it does so using an emulator. Obviously, this is not good for the performance. It is not recommended to run any performance critical PA-RISC application (such as IDS) on HP-UX Itanium. IDS on HP-UX PA-RISC is not certified to run on HP-UX Itanium. One more factor is that you cannot mix PA-RISC and Itanium objects/libraries together. A PA-RISC version of IDS would not be able to dynamically load a Itanium shared object (e.g. UDR, Data Blade) and vice-versa. The same restriction would apply to CSDK also (if you try to use PA-RISC CSDK on Itanium). The user should use the native Itanium IDS versions. Probably, HP-Itanium 11.23 PI might solves the purpose.... ( Where PI stands for combined architecture for PA-RISC & Itanium.) Hello, first two general comments: 1) 'backward' binary compatibility of HPUX IA64 for PA-Risc executeables is a great thing and works very well for many programs (look at the HPUX man page 'aries' ) 2) it DOESN't work well (or not at all) for multithreaded applications IDS 9.x/10.x PA-Risc version running on IA64 hardware starts but doesn't reach the 'online' state in all cases I have seen - it just hangs. If the database wasn't shut down cleanly it might even trash the database. But the following works: Install the same IDS versions (must be at least 9.40, must be F=64bit, patchlevel should be similar) with PA-Risc code on the PA-Risc hardware and with IA64 code on the IA64 hardware. Afterwards you can move your database (by moving/switching disks or copying disk contents) at least from PA-Risc to IA64. I think you can move the database the other direction too but I have never tried.
