lost database after restart
Posted in 2007
A new IDS 10 user on Red Hat 4 restarted with 'onmode -ky' then 'oninit -iv' and found his database gone. Replies explained that -i re-initialises disk space, wiping rootdbs and all user databases; it should only ever be used on the very first setup, with plain 'oninit' (or 'oninit -v') for normal restarts. The lost data is unrecoverable without an ontape/onbar restore, so he must recreate it. Posters also suggested wrapping/renaming oninit to block accidental '-i', and one shared a ksh wrapper script that refuses -i (and -y) unless '-I' is used.

Hi
I have just installed my 1st informix server under Linux Redhat Enterprise 4.
The Informix version is "Informix Dynamic Server 10.00.UC3R1TL"
I´ve restarted the server with: onmode -ky (to stop the server) and then
oninit -iv (to start)
The problem is that now I can´t see a database that I created before
restarting the server. How can I see this database?
Thnaks in advance
Regards
Do NOT use -i option after ste first initialisation. This option will recreate
rootdbs and all data will be lost.
Just start your database using "oninit" or "oninit -v".
Good luck,
gerd

The problem is that you are initializing the instance every time you start it.
Oninit -i must be executed only the first time, subsequent restarts must be
done using onmode -yk and either oninit or oninit -v for startup. The -v to
see what is doing during startup.

Yip quite correct. oninit -I initialises your whole instance
and will therefor wipe any user created databases.

The switch -i means "Initialize disk space and shared memory, leave in on-line
mode." Maybe you started with "-iy", then you have already answered "yes" to
the
question if you want to delete existing databases. So if you don't have a
backup
then it is just to do the job again.

You have done what many people have done in the past, used "oninit -i" when
meaning to use "oninit".
While I was working at Informix (pre-IBM), many people called in with this
issue. You even had "pro" Informix DBAs calling in asking if there was "any
way on (insert favorite deity here)'s green earth" their instance could be
restored short of a ontape/onbar restore. The answer, sadly, is always no.
While there, I even entered in a "Feature Request" asking that the oninit
i be replaced with a build initialize. Other build arguments would
have generated the onparams commands and/or the onspaces commands needed to
rebuild your instance should the need ever arise. I am guessing it is
either still gathering dust or was deleted a long time ago.
It is really surprising that nobody (and that includes myself) has never
written a shell around the oninit command that would prohibit the use of the
"oninit -i" command. Maybe one day ...
Take care.

I seem to remember assisting in just such a feature request mere week=

The simplest thing to do is rename oninit and then make aliases for t=

common commands to that name, while not creating an alias for oninit =

I found a script a while back...heck maybe on the iiug website...
just getting old and cannot remember.
#!/bin/ksh
# I found an example like this somewhere,

# simple wrapper to prevent accidental running of oninit -iy
# mv /usr/informix/bin/oninit /usr/informix/bin/oninit.cmd
# cp this file to /usr/informix/bin/oninit
# set appropriate permissions for new file.
CMD=${0}.cmd
if [[ "$1" = -*i* ]] ; then
echo "WARNING! oninit -i will completely erase this instance!"
echo "If that's what you REALLY want to do, then re-run this"
echo "command using a capital '-I' instead. (e.g. oninit -I )."
exit

if [[ "$1" = -*y* ]] ; then
echo "Please do not use the y flag when initializing the engine."
exit
