To initialize Informix you must be user informix and the environment variables
must be
correct. Please refer to my responses below.

Your ROOTSIZE is too small.

You should also specify the onconfig file you are using by adding this line in
your
profile
ONCONFIG=onconfig
INFORMIXDIR=/opt/informix
PATH=$PATH:$INFORMIXDIR/bin
export ONCONFIG INFORMIXDIR PATH
And please run "env" to check if all the environment variables are correct.

Basically you can have the same values for DBSERVERNAME and INFORMIXSERVER.
Why are you using /etc/profile?

It refers to a file.

I think the problem that you have is that the /dev directory places a
permission
restriction on the file that you created. Remember in Unix that directory
permissions
have an impact on what you can do with the files under that directory even if
you have
all the permission for a file.
You'd be better off for now to create the files in the INFORMIXDIR directory,
that is
if this directory has the correct permissions for informix. And then change the
ROOTPATHto point to that file.

The minimum size is dependent on several factors the size of your physical log,
logical log, number of logical logs, plus system tables. If your using the
defaults
I would probably stick with 100 MB to be safe.
