Informix loses data !
Posted in 2000
A user on HP-UX 10.20 running the Informix engine bundled with Netscape SuiteSpot (LiveWire) reported that about 30 old rows vanished from a database with no transaction logging, back in Nov 1999 before a server/NES upgrade. Respondents suggested likely causes rather than an engine bug: users deleting rows themselves, rolled-back transactions, triggers/cascading deletes, or unflushed buffered changes lost in a crash because the database was unlogged. Advice was to enable (unbuffered) logging, audit via triggers, inspect logs with onlog, and back up often. The poster said he would check; no confirmed cause or resolution is recorded.

Hi all We,ve got Informix dynamic server (the one which comes with Netscape Suitespot) running on our intranet... Now we've got a slight little problem with it - it's losing existing data... Some records have suddenly dissapeared with no warnings... What might cause this kind of behaviour ? Has it something to do with the size of the database ? Any Ideas ? I'd like to get it fixed before any bigger damage happens... Markku ;-)

Is that the LiveWire Pro stuff? That's a little ancient these days, but it still shouldn't be losing data. On the other hand, I'm not sure that it will be regarded as fully Y2K-compliant, either. What platform? How do you know it is losing data? Are you sure someone isn't deleting it for you? Are you using raw disk files or cooked chunks? Do you have a transaction log on your database? -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.95 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>

Yes it's LiveWire and it should be y2k compliant (manufacturers words)

We have UNIX with HP 10.20 (server sw NES 3.6)
About 30 old records dissappeared somewhere...
They couldn't be found either via our web-application nor dbaccess
utilities...
Not knowing when or where...
This database is only in use for a limited group of people, who shouldn't
be deleting their own work...
Data is in raw-disk files
We dont have Transaction log
It has not done this recently, actually this happened in November 1999....
(with NES 2.1)
This problem disappeared in December 1999, when we took a new server and
server SW (updating NES to 3.6) to use...
I'm just worried that it would happen again, and trying to get some help
to avoid it beforehand...

Whenever my users have accused the system of changing/deleting data on its
own the change has proved to have been done by a user!
Use triggers to update audit tables. Oh the satisfaction of pointing the
finger, IT WAS YOU BOY, YOU DELETED THE DATA Haahhhaaaaaaaaaa
Sorry, forgot my dried frog pills this morning :o)

This could be the cause of the problem. If you have added or updated rows, do
not have a logged database using unbuffered logging, and take a system crash,
it is possible that you will lose data or updates. This can occur because the
changes exist only in the buffer. Have you had any crashes or power
failures???

If you have logging turned on, you could examine your old logs to
determine responsibility. This can be quite a painful process but it is
doable. If you know approximately when the rows went missing, examine
your message log to determine which specific log(s) you need to look
into. Read the FM on "onlog".

Poor transaction handling?? Trigger somewhere??? Cascading delete??? The Informix engine does not just loose data, you are most likely loosing transactions. Nona

At the risk of sounding sarcastic HAW HAW! I think that's your
explanation
right there! How many times have you deleted something by mistake and
been
100% convinced that the computer was broken because your data
disappeared?
Or do your team never make tyops? I know I do...

This would tend to indicate that your data is not particularly
important.
If you can't be bothered with logging I would suggest frequent
back-ups.
