I don't feel that backing up .dat and .idx is enough.
In addition to that, I run dbschema for all tables, and unload all data.
Thus, if an index is corrupted, you can rebuild a table and load the data.

But if you restore on another machine don't forget the logfile or you can't access the database. When I did this once for a SE 5.0 I ran into trouble when the database logfile did not exist in the expected path. I don't know if this is still true for 7.x. If you can remember only partly it's name you can try "grep" to find the full path in "systables.dat" Axel

Try it. Be sure that all DB-connections are closed and copy all dat/idx files
to an
other maschine with the same directory stucture.
Test it, or ask Art if I am right. When you export the data, you can import it
on every Informix DB.
But for backup it is enough to backup the files (perhaps the transaktion
file).

I agree. Also, you can lose referential integrity by using Unix
backups, since the backup is not 'instantaneous'.
