Informix 4.5 manuals/doc?
Posted in 2007
A poster asked where to find manuals for an "Informix 4.5" database after his company hit a production problem on it. Several veterans (Kagel, Leffler, others) replied that no Informix product was ever released as 4.5, and walked through the actual version history of the pre-SQL Informix (to 3.30), ISQL/I4GL, SE and OnLine (4.00/4.10, then 5.x onwards), asking him to identify the product properly; version 5 docs are on IBM's site, but 4.x manuals are essentially unobtainable online. He later reported the engine was in fact Informix SE 7.3 (his original info was wrong), though one reply noted no such SE release existed either. No documentation source or fix for the underlying production issue is recorded.

Hello everyone. I did poke around here a bit but did find anything. Some group in my company is having a prod issue with an ancient informix 4.5 database. Does anyone know where I can find manuals on 4.5? Or any usefull doc? Much appreciated. Thanks, Will

What process is started up for the engine if any? Is there a tbinit process? An sqlexec or sqlturbo process? If it's SE not much has changed and the current documentation for SE 7.xx will give you what you might need. Otherwise you might post the nature of the problem here or on the classics forum and see who bites. Art S. Kagel

Hi, I remember an Informix Turbo 4.0. Could it be that release ? What exactly is the problem (was really unstable, as far as I remember ...) ? I worked with versions 4.00, 4.10 and 4.11 YEARS AGO, but do not remember a 4.5. As I remember it, 5.00-5.03 added triggers, stored procedures (and ISTAR?). The old pre-ISQL (Informer?) product ended at 3.3. Thanks, Will Just as with everyone else, I don't recall a version 4.5 of anything produced by Informix. The pre-SQL product (called just Informix) ran up to 3.30. ISQL started at 1.10, went to 2.00, 2.10, 2.10.03 and then jumped to 4.00. I4GL started at 1.00 alongside ISQL 2.00; then 1.10, 1.10.03, and then 4.00. ESQL/C was at version 2.10 when ISQL was at 1.10, I believe (but would accept correction). And so on. Within the 4.x versions, OnLine (not Turbo any more) and SE had versions 4.00 and 4.10 -- maybe 4.11 and 4.12 as well, but no further. ISQL and I4GL went 4.00, 4.10 to 4.16. OnLine and SE jumped to 5.00 through 5.08, then 5.10, 5.11, and 5.20. OnLine become OnLine Dynamic Server, then Informix Dynamic Server and so on, starting with 6.00, 7.00, 7.10..7.14, 7.20..7.24, 7.30, 7.31, 8.00..8.5x (XPS), and 9.00 onwards. ISQL and I4GL had versions 6.00 through 6.05 (parallel to 4.12 .. 4.16 - I don't think there was a 4.17), then went to 7.20, 7.30, 7.31, 7.32. So, please can you identify your Informix product a little more carefully. Or did you mean version 4 or version 5? If so, the version 5 manuals are still available from the IBM web site (easiest route is normally www.informix.com, but that has been a little unstable of late - so maybe www.ibm.com/software/data/informix/library). For version 4.x manuals, you're scraping the barrel looking for them online -- the web was barely invented when they were released. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2007.0914 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ NB: Please do not use this email for correspondence. Hi everyone. Sorry for the poor question. I found out that the informix engine was informix SE 7.3 I had been given bogus info. Thanks for the responses.
