hi all,
i hope soemone can help me- we have a se database which needs to be
backed up periodically... however, the system cannot 'chuck' other users
off periodically, and it seems that this is necessary if we are to use
the dbexport mechanism. Is there any other method for backing up an se
database (such as ontape or onbar ) or are we in a dilly of a pickle?

We're backing up C-isam files of SE with tar, dump/restore and with
cpio, and it works great.
This is for about 20 gigabytes of many, small, c-isam files, written to
DDS-4 or DDS-3.
But our database must be online only between office hours; so backup at
night is not much of a problem.
If you want to use ontape and onbar , you should simply look into IDS
instead of SE I think.
You need a more powerful database server. The nice thing is that the
development tools (sqlcmd, Perl DBI, ESQL programs etc.) seem to work
with both engines, so you can start with something small as SE and
upgrade to IDS when necessary.

You can backup SE databases with OS archiving tools, HOWEVER, to get
a consistent, safe, restorable backup you will still have to kick the
users off for the duration of the backup. This is the reason that
when Informix came out with its enterprise quality database server,
the original Gamma test name of 'Turbo' was scraped in favor of the
name 'Informix Online' because its primary new feature was the
ability to safely backup the server without kicking users off. If
you need this capability you will have to upgrade to one of the IDS
versions.
