changing user passwords?
Posted in 2004
Daniel (IDS 9.4 on Windows) asked for the SQL syntax to create database users and change their passwords, and how to change the server's listening port. Respondents explained Informix has no password store of its own: authentication is handled by the operating system, so users and passwords must be created/changed through Windows user administration, while GRANT DBA/CONNECT only handles in-database privileges. The port is changed by editing the services file (winnt\\system32\\drivers\\etc) and making the matching change in sqlhosts. His follow-up about a JDBC "connection refused" using the informix account was left unresolved in the thread.

Hi fellow Informix users, Care for more questions? Lets say I have a database called xyz, and a user called joe that is allowed to access it as dba. How can I change the password for joe? And, how do I create a new user and set its password? Lastly, is there a way to change the default listening port once the software has been installed, and if so how? I am using Informix IDS 9.4 on Windows. Thanks all for your patience and help!

You edit the services file in (I think) \\winnt\\system32\\drivers\\etc, then make a similar change to your SQLHOSTS in the Informix program group. > I am using Informix IDS 9.4 on Windows. > > Thanks all for your patience and help! Informix doesn't have it's own authentication, it relies on OS authentication. >> > Lastly, is there a way to change the default listening port once the >> > software has been installed, and if so how? >> >> You edit the services file in (I think) \\winnt\\system32\\drivers\\etc, then >> make a similar change to your SQLHOSTS in the Informix program group. >> >> > I am using Informix IDS 9.4 on Windows. >> > >> > Thanks all for your patience and help! >> >> Sure, but try to RTFM at some stage. :o) > > I don't have a manual as of yet...I'll just ask you or the group. :) F*** that for a game of soldiers. http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/ - Now you have the manual. -- "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien ''' dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche
I think this is what I mean. In Server Studio, I opened up a sql editor and
pointed it to my database, then entered a command like this:
grant dba to someusername
grant connect to someusername
I guess what I am asking is, what is the syntax for the command to change
the password of "someusername"?
Also, how to do I create a new user and set its password within this sql
editor?
Thanks.

OTC told you - you don't. IDS uses underlying operating system users and passwords - in your case 'doze users. -- Clive

Whoops, Informix uses the Window user accounts to authenicate against, it does not maintain a separate list of users in the database, no window account = no access for user -- Paul Watson # Oninit Ltd # Growing old is mandatory Tel: +44 1436 672201 # Growing up is optional Fax: +44 1436 678693 # Mob: +44 7818 003457 # www.oninit.com #
someusername must exist as a Windows account. If you were on Unix
then you could do what you want with a UDR and bit of hassle, but you'd
still only create/update an OS level account.

When I installed IDS 9.4, it created a user called informix as an account for the Windows OS. Perhaps if I explained what I want to do, it might make more sense. I am trying to connect to the database using JDBC. The problem is, when I use JDBC and use the informix name and password (from the OS), it does not let me connect to it (I get a connection refused message). Thanks all... Right. This is user authorization. You set the user's privileges
in the database with SQL statements.

That's a complete different story, namely user authentication. Informix
doesn't do this itself, but relies on the operating system for doing this.
Since you are on Windows, use the Windows procedure for changing the
password. You cannot do this in SQL or a sql editor.

Same here, you don't. Use the Windows procedures to create a new user
and set the password. After that you go into your sql editor and use
SQL statements to grant that new user privileges in the database.
