Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A DBA with a 7GB (soon 14GB) PeopleSoft database containing 5000+ tables found dbimport too slow for frequently cloning databases, and asked whether HPL or another tool would be faster. Suggestions: if the target servers are identical and on the same Informix release, use an ontape level-0 backup/restore to clone, which is much faster than unload/load; use Princeton Softech Relational Tools to extract and move a data subset (including cross-DBMS); and check whether the dbimport version builds indexes before loading data, a known bug in some older versions that badly hurts performance. The poster never reported back, so no confirmed resolution is recorded.

I have a 7gb PeopleSoft database which will grow to 14gb with a month
or two. We frequently make copies of databases and create new
databases. Dbimport seems to be awfully slow with some of my large
tables and overall in general.
Is there a better way or utility. Is there a way to do it with HPL? I
think I've seen this somewhere before on this email list but I can't
find it. PeopleSoft by the way has over 5000+ tables.
As always, your input and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you want the ability to "quickly" make
DB clones of your source database. If the clone DBs are setup exactly the
same and under the same Informix release, you can simply do an ONTAPE Level
0 restore to the destination DBs. The process runs much faster than normal
LOADS./UNLOADS.
Hope this helps. Thanks.

If it is only part of the data you need, you could consider using
Princeton Software technologys Relational Tools
(http://www.princetonsoftech.com/)
to extract a subset and insert it into another DB.
Data can also be moved between different databases
eg. Informix --> Oracle.
It is also good for viewing and editing data.

Check whether your version of DB-Import creates the indexes before
or after loading the tables -- it would make a tremendous difference,
and I think that there were some (a few!) versions with a bug such
that indexes were created before the load. I think it is unlikely to
be your problem -- you should have upgrade from such versions by now.
