Well, Obonxio The Smart Clown, this is full story just 4u.
First there was a sparcstation 10 with Solaris 2.5 and Informix 7.2something
DS. There
were 2 instances of DS on that machine with the same disk configuration:
50Megs of
root dbs and 450Megs of data dbs. When the system crashed $INFORMIXDIR was
lost too. So, I knew only that this raw disk was on the /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s5
partition, and
that it was 1G big (and in configuration I used link and not that device
name).
I plug out that disk and mount it in one sparcstation 2 with SunOS 4.1.1 and
without
Informix instalation. Unfortunately, there was only 130Megs of free disk
space. So
I dd-ed 100 by 100 Megs from raw partition (10 times of course), and I
ftp-ed that
to ultra sparc 2 with Informix DS 7.22.UC1. I just cat-ed 10 files to 1 big
file (1Gig).
Then I easily restored configuration files from this big file. Next step was
to make link
with the same name as in old DS. Next I changed DS number because that
machine also has several instances of DS. Then I had to change environment
variables
(ONCONFIG and INFORMIXSERVER) make two (actually four because of tcp
and shmem connections) more records in sqlhosts file and my server was ready
to
oninit it. Second server was ready just with changing environment variables.
Will that be enough or I have to draw it?

Well, here is my story. I tried the dd migration on a small database,
and it worked so well, we migrated our production server this past
weekend. 350Gbytes in ~12hours (slow and single SCSI bus). Performed
series of onchecks before the migration and after to verify the
transfer. Worked flawlessly!
Thanks to all for the sanity check and advice on the migration.
