Dropping a blobspace
Posted in 2006
A DBA on IDS 9.40 (Solaris 8) couldn't drop an apparently empty three-chunk blobspace: "onspaces -d <space>" gave "DBspace is not empty" and dropping by space name failed with "Dbspace does not exist", even in single-user mode. Replies explained that blob pages are only freed after all blobs are deleted and a level-0 archive is taken, and that chunks must be dropped with the chunk syntax "onspaces -d <space> -p <pathname> -o <offset>" (try onstat -d update first); the initial/last remaining chunk can't be dropped individually - you drop the whole space instead. The original poster didn't confirm success, so no outcome is recorded.

All,
We have an unused blobspace and we would like to reallocate the space to
other dbspaces. Unfortunately, we are unable to figure out how to drop
the blobspace. We have IDS 9.40.UC6 running on SunOS 5.8 and we are
using the "Expanded chunk capacity mode". The blobspace has three
chunks. Here is what we've tried:
1. onspaces -d sods_mart_blob1 (received an error Cannot drop the Space.
ISAM error: DBspace is not empty)
2. Tried dropping the individual chunks: onspaces -d sods_mart_blob1_2
(received an error "Dbspace does not exist")
3. The manual says that in order to drop blobspaces, the engine needs to
be in single user mode so we did onmode -s and tried again with the same
errors as above.
We've looked at oncheck -pe and the results show no index or tables
using that blob. Below is the output:
Chunk Pathname Size Used
Free
24 /home/informix/smartp/links/sods_mart_blob1 1023992 4049
1019943
Disk usage for Chunk 24

The only thing we see is overhead. Each chunk belonging to this primary
chunk contains overhead.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For blobspace, all blobs have to be deleted and a level-0 archive done
to free the space, correct? Once that's done, drop the chunks in a
"last-added, first-dropped" kind of order.
Perhaps a new 'feature'?!

the first chunk that you've created must by the last to drop
use the sintax "onspaces -d <dbspace> -p< pathname> -o <offset>" to second and
3th in any order,
then use the sintax "onspaces -d <dbspace>" to the first you´ve created to
drop the blobspace.

Correct me if I'm wrong here -- when you have the last chunk or your
blobspace/dbspace is now consisting of only one chunk -- then you cannot drop
that chunk, you will have to drop the blobspace/dbspace.

A dbspace/blobspace is a pool of chunks, you can't have a dbspaces without
chunks, it must have at least one chunk. To drop the last chunk, you have to
drop the dbspace/blobspace.
