New chunk has 0 pages free after 30 minutes
Posted in 2009
A DBA on IDS 9.40 (Solaris) added a 5 GB chunk to a nearly full dbspace and found it showed 0 free pages within 30 minutes, with nothing unusual in the message log. Respondents suggested checking what actually occupied the chunk with 'oncheck -pe'. The output showed three application tables (cnin801, cnin8, cnout801) consuming the entire chunk in huge extents. So the space was genuinely used, not an internal quirk; the application developers confirmed a runaway loop generating masses of messages, a problem they had seen at another site.

Hi folks,
can anyone help me out (or explain what's happening) ??
I have IDS 9.40 UC6 running on Solaris 9 (sparc), dbspaces are configured on a
filesystem. One dbspace had only 312 pages free so I added a chunk of 5 Gb.
All went well, but after less than 30 minutes, the "onstat -d" indicates 0
pages free while other values do not change. No particular messages in the
logfile.
Here's part of the output of "onstat -d" :
Chunks
address chunk/dbs offset size free bpages flags pathname
19d0e928 1 1 0 500000 490826 PO-B /infor/dkisa
19d0ec80 2 2 0 500000 496781 PO-B /d02/DBisa/temp
19d0ee08 3 3 0 40000000 312 PO-B /d02/DBisa/prod

1a4e4018 6 6 0 750000 224947 PO-B /r02/DBisa/logspace
1d7a6940 7 3 0 2500000 0 PO-B /d02/DBisa/prod_ch1

Is this normal behaviour ? Internal reorganisation or really occupied space ?
Thanks for any feedback.

Hi
Nobody deleted the Raw device ?
It means the chunk definition is still ON and the chunk physical no more
Or ... is the chunk used for Logical Log or Physical Log ?
Sould be good if whole output of onstat -d and onstat -D will be sent for us
...

it's not about RAW-devices, it's on a filesystem !!
Here's what I've done
touch /d02/DBisa/prod_ch1

onspaces -a prod -p /d02/DBisa/prod_ch1 -o 0 -s 5000000

Run oncheck -pe p see what has been placed in that chunk.

When you perform an oncheck -pe, what does it list for the "prod" dbspace?
Take care.

Sure, all statements are Ok ...
The "prod" dbspace is not physical log, right ?
The interesting thing is you have other chunk (# 3) as the first chunk of
dbspace "prod" and it mention has 2 chunks for that dbspace.
Could any table have a very large "next extent" and fill a whole chunk ?
Or, you create a new table with very large first extent ?
You could find all extents of tblspace in this chunk, running a select agaist
sysmaster tables.
Sorry I do not have an IDS instance now to tell you the name of the sysmaster
tables...
But is something like syschunks , sysextents

Ok thanks a lot guys,
the output of the oncheck -pe indicated some tables and I contacted the
developers of the application,
something seems to be in a loop generating lots of messages !!
They had a similar problem on another site.
Thanks again !!
Best regards
