Show query plan?

How can I see what the query engine is doing behind the scenes when I type a query? In other words, how can I see its query execution plan (creating temp work tables and such)? I remember in SQL Server its something like SHOW QUERY PLAN ON... Thanks, Sunil
SET EXPLAIN ON;
The resulting query plan will be written to the file 'sqexplain.out' (in
your home directory on the server machine if you are a remote user).
