Cannot add a new chunk to the DBspace
Posted in 2016
User running IDS 7.31 on AIX 5.3 encountered "Cannot add a new chunk to the DBspace" error when trying to add a 2GB chunk. Although disk space was available, the issue was traced to insufficient contiguous free space in the original root chunk (only 8 pages free). Solution: drop a table or logical log residing in the original root chunk to free space, add the new chunk, then recreate the dropped object.

Hi,
i tried to add new chunk to database but it's failed with error. chunk size is
2GB and this dbspace has 55 chunks exist.
OS version: AIX 5.3
informix version: IDS 7.31
in disk level and VG level has enough space.
error:
$ onspaces -a regdbs -p /dblinks/dbsreg59 -o 0 -s 2096128Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
Cannot add a new chunk to the DBspace.
ISAM error: no free disk space
what would be the case for this issue ? any one has idea about this.
Thanks
Pushpa
Hu, really old version.
That one can only handle 2GB chunks.
The size parameter should work (maximum would be 2097152).
Check if you have enough space on the device (with dd maybe),
I would suspect a partitioning problem.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/ dblinks/dbsreg59 bs=1024 count= 2096128
(should run through, not break with an error, like end of medium reached or
similar)
(We recently replaced such an old version with a Linux based 11.70 Innovator
Edition, which now runs
on virtualized hardware and has the same functionality as before, addressed
over TCP from a very old SCO based legacy system.
Definitely, you should consider upgrading since you will get no support in
case you run into any problem.
We upgraded only the IDS and all the old apps were usable without change, you
should give it a try
maybe with a 11.70 Innovator edition, normally you would not touch the
memory/processor restriction
compared to such an old system and gain a performance improvement, together
with the ability to backup in
files instead of tapes (which was one of the reasons we replaced the old
system).
Of course, there is no direct upgrade path, so we did a dbexport/dbimport
which was really fast (estimate data size was 25GB).
There is one drawback - you cannot use the 12.x version of Innovator, looking
on the amount of data you handle,
because there is a restriction. But there maybe the choice to use the express
edition or workgroup edition instead, in case nobody would
be interested to invest a lot of money to licence costs. It is more expensive
to run into a non-functional system because
of failing old hardware)
Hope this helps,
Marcus Haarmann

I'd rather assume this old 7.31 server has no more room in root chunk to=20
expand reserved pages required for storing the additional chunk=20
descriptor.
-> use 'oncheck -pe' to verify this assumption - no or only little=20
(contiguous) free space in root chunk
-> try and free some space in root chunk, e.g. by unloading and dropping a =
table residing there
Once the chunk could be added, you might recreate and reload the dropped=20
table and it would find other space in rootdbs.

Andreas

Hi Andreas, this instance has total 78 data chunks and 55 chunks for this dbspace and root chunk has free space as bellows 70000028006e2a8 1 1 50 65475 8 PO- /dblinks/rootpr 70000028006e3c0 1 1 50 65475 0 MO- /dblinks/rootmr 700000280cd45a0 75 1 25 131072 107509 PO- /dblinks/rootpr2 700000280cd4a00 75 1 25 131072 0 MO- /dblinks/rootmr2 thanks Pushpa
Pushpa From recollection of a similar error (many years ago) the free space required must be in the original root chunk and not in any additional chunk. Correct, and this root chunk only has 8 free pages left which, even if=20 contiguous, might be too little - depends a bit on on your chunk path=20 lengths which, in v7, still used to impact the number of chunks fitting on = a single reserved page. Go and find some table in root dbspace, with an extent in root chunk (#1), = that you can drop and later recreate after you've added the chunk.=20 Alternatively, if you have your logical logs in rootdbs, find and drop one = residing in root chunk.
