Why not code your App to use ODBC? Then I can use any db I want. unixODBC gives you the ODBC API on several UNIX platforms, and you already have it on Win32. I wish more projects would take this approach so I can use the DB I already have (be it Informix or PostgreSQL) and relate the data generated from that application to data from other applications . . . I mean WOW what a concept. ;) Informix, Oracle, etc... already have ODBC for every platform under the sun (pun!), and unixODBC provides drivers for several of the freebee db engines. JDBC is the best. Java access and can use ODBC sources, via the JDBC-ODBC bridge so it is a superset of ODBC. Type 4 (Pure java) JDBC drivers are truely platform independent as well. One driver for ALL platforms, no Solaris version, HP version, ..."Oh we havn't made a version for your OS yet"... "One driver to..and in the darkness bind them" I'm feeling very "Lord of the Rings" today!
