RE: Informix Dynamic Server V7.3 on SCO Open Server V5.04 installation problem
Posted in 2000
Topics: Installation, Setup & Upgrades
We have IDS running on a machine with 64Mb Ram! (Live site with 5 users
too).
Your configuration requires more semaphores than your system parameters
allow. Reduce the number of users in NETTYPE or change the connection
method or add more semaphores.
Using the defaults as supplied is not conducive to get Informix running for
every situation. Read the release notes (release/en_us/0333 - IDS_7.3,
SERVERS_7.3) for SCO parameters.
We can help if you post your messages log and your Informix configuration
file.

Subject: Informix Dynamic Server V7.3 on SCO Open Server V5.04
installation problem
Hi,
I have a problem when installing the Informix Dynamic Server V7.3 (download
from the intrware for evaluation) on the SCO OpenServer V5.04 platform,
after setup of the root data space and all the parameters are taking the
default value in the ONMONITOR. While the database server start-up, it have
the following error:
oninit: Fatal error initializing ASF with 'ASF_INIT_DATA' flags;
asfcode='-25580'.
And the online.log contains the following error:
'(2) failure, system out of semaphores'
The same error is happening while running the oninit command.
At the moment, I want to ask if there anyone is using the IDS7.3 on the
OpenServer platform? And what is the minimum hardware requirement for the
IDS installation (since I am current installing it in a machine with only
32M of ram, which could run the Informix online 5.08 without any problem)?
and any kenel parameters alternation need?
Thanks,
Kenny Fong
Hi Murray,
Furthermore, I have may some parameters change in the kernel for the
semaphore setting and upgrade the system memory to 64M Ram, but still the
same error.
Attached is the IDS configuration file and the message error files:

Most parameters can be changed via scoadmin. For some you need to use idtune (man idtune) to change the parameter. For one it is outside the maximum in the mtune file (man mtune) so change the mtune file and then use idtune. I have done this an rebuild the kernel using scoadmin. I have it working fine. Note to get KAIO to work I needed to upgrade to 7.31.UC5. I would recommend this upgrade. -- David Williams
Just an aside, the engine is rounding your resident shared memory block size
up from the calculated value of 588K to 4096K probably because SCO allocates
segments of at least 4096K anyway. This being the case you might as well
take advantage and raise the number of buffers from 200 to 1900 which will
still fit in the 4096K already allocated and greatly improve performance.
