Re: AIX and Informix
Posted in 2006
A user migrating from HP-UX to AIX 5.3 with Informix v10, HACMP clustering and HDR reported trouble: they used a dbspace offset of 0 (as on HP) and were told AIX's volume group management needs a non-zero offset; they also saw apparent corruption and a negative '% used' in onstat -d after dropping a large database. Replies disagreed somewhat: Paul Watson said AIX shouldn't need an offset (he runs zero-offset systems fine), but Malcolm Weallans said testing with his AIX admins showed offset 0 corrupts the volume label, which matters when exporting volumes between HACMP nodes, so a small offset is safer. No definitive fix for the negative-space symptom is recorded.

Thanks for the comments.
We are running into several things.
One is that we set the offset of the dbspace to 0. We are being told it
needs to have an offset of "something" - that AIX wants this for the
volume group management. Our current environ is HP which we have always
used an offset of 0 - it has never been an issue. We have our physical,
log and root spaces mirrored and there looks to be some kind of
corruption, according to support. Kinda wondering if the HACMP
clustering might be involved also but unsure.
What we are seeing is this: I dropped a large database and when I went
to check out the spaces using onstat -d pertaining to the space the DB
used to be in, the % used was a negative number. So the total size free
is greater than the total size allocated.

Obnox, No cares about losing space whatsoever. The problem and its root cause are our concern. The integration of HACMP and Volume Manager may be a problem - but we are unsure and are researching, etc. Wish I knew - Tom Obnoxio The Clown wrote: > tomcaml@yahoo.com said: > > > > One is that we set the offset of the dbspace to 0. AIX should NOT require an offset, if you use one then there is no harm.
The LVM VTOC is not visible to the OS

OK from comments others have made I sit corrected, but I have a number
of V4 AIX systesm (no HACMP) with zero offsets that have been rebooted
many times without a problem

I actually did a test with our AIX system administration team. If we set
offset to 0 ir corrupts the volume label. And that is used when you try to
export the volume to a different system - as is often the case with HACMP.
So, use offset 0 if you wish but don't expect it always to work.
