I believe the 32767 is the *total* string space for the entire program.
In other words you divide the 32767 among all of your string constants,
so it wouldn't work to have a single string that large unless you only
had one string. I'm not sure if string VARIABLES are included in this total,
or just string CONSTANTS. If memory serves, there was a bunch of
list-messages recently on the subject of string-space. At any rate,
the 512 chars is a limit for the entire SELECT statement, not merely
the WHERE clause.
Some other fun error messages related to limits on string size:
-844 Statement is too long (maximum 2048 characters).
-2023 Quoted string exceeds the maximum length for quoted strings, which is 80.
-4502 4GL program has run out of runtime data space memory. Make sure that
no function returns a character string longer than 512 characters.
-4517 Strings of length > 512 cannot be returned from function calls.
Of course, no software developer wants to write their limits in stone
by including them in their documentation. The documentation must be written
while the code is still being developed. Je comprende, Informix; but it sure
is a pain having to search through the arcane error messages to find the limits.
Now watch, some Informix employee is going to recommend again that I purchase
dBase :-)
