Created test dbspace is not visible IDS 12.1
Posted in 2015
A user on IDS 12.10 (SUSE Linux) ran onspaces -c -d to create a dbspace; the command reported that the chunk file must have READ/WRITE permissions for owner and group (660), and the new dbspace/chunks never appeared in onstat -d. He had set the chunk file to looser permissions (777/774), assuming 660 was just a minimum, and also restarted the server and fiddled with oninit's ownership (which should be 6754 root:informix). Resolution: setting the chunk file to exactly 660, owned by informix:informix, made the creation work; no restart is needed to add dbspaces.

Hi experts,
IDS Ver: 12.1
OS: Linux SUSE 11.3
I have added a test db space using onspaces command. It didnt throw any error.
But I cant see the created dbspace.
informix@ids:/opt/ibm/informix/bin> onspaces -c -d testDB1 -p
/opt/ibm/informix/storage/spaces/testDB1 -o 200 -s 2093150
Your evaluation license will expire on 2015-06-21 00:00:00
Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
The chunk '/opt/ibm/informix/storage/spaces/testDB1' must have READ/WRITE
permissions for owner and group (660).
-------------
RW permission is given the chunk file.
I have restarted database using onmode -ky and onmode -s; But still the DB is
not available.
How to solve this.
Re run the onspaces command, the first attempt failed because of permissions
error.
You don't need to restart instance when adding dbspaces or chunks.

I have tried/rerun the onspaces command multiple times. Output is same and no
error messages. I am seeing the same behavior for adding chunks also. The
added chunks not visible when I give onstat -d or onstat.
This was the same command I was using in 11.7. So for 12.1 also I have set all
config parameters same as 11.7.
Here is the output of onstat. I have noticed that plog and llog space is less
or pages are not free. Will this cause problem? If yes, how to increase them.
Adding chunks to plogs failed.

What are the permissions of the oninit binary?

oninit binary had the permissions 774 with user as root and group as informix.
Then I have changed user to informix making it informix:informix. No success.
Now after these experiments, my server initialization(reset)
fails.(DISK_INIT=1; oninit -ivy). Need to checK why.
That's your problem: oninit should be 6754 root:informix, however I'd warn you
against changing it by hand, because judging by your original permissions,
it's likely that the ownership of all other knformix binaries are wrong.
Installing in a fresh directory might be your best option.

This file: /opt/ibm/informix/storage/spaces/testDB1 has to be owned by user
informix, group informix with permissions 660. The dbspace was not created
because these permissions were not correct.

Yes Art/Marco.. Issue resolved. The problem was permission. I thought minimum requirement is 660. Hence give given higher permissions like 777 and 774. Now I have reverted to 660 and it worked. I am surprised by this behavior. Must be for Security but I feel an appropriate error message should be thrown.
Honestly Nigil, the error message was pretty explicit. It said, basically,
that onspaces couldn't create the dbspace because the chunk did not have
660 permissions. Kind of nails the problem in my mind.

I would think this should be expected behavior from any = =0D enterprise class database server.
