Bill,
Informix keeps the path to all dbspaces (including rootdbs)
in RESERVED PAGES - first 12 pages of the root dbspace.
In particular, primary chunks are on pages 6 and 7
(these pages contain absolutely the same information),
mirror chunks are on (mirrored) pages 8 and 9; page numbers start
from zero.
Use 'oncheck -pr' to display the information in reserved pages.
To avoid situations like what You had, it is strongly advised
to always use symbolic links to actual devices for Informix chunks.
Otherwise the only way to move the chunk to another location is to
make the binary editing of reserved pages
