V14.10.FC9 installer missing librarie(s)?
Posted in 2022
Art Kagel found the 14.10.FC9 install lacked libisi.so.2, and after linking it to libisi_gsk.so.2.2 oninit still could not load libgsk8iccs_64.so. Causes included GSKit not installing (a failed RPM; see gskit.log; no deb packages for Debian/Ubuntu). Workaround: symlink libisi.so.2 to libisi_gsk.so.2.2 and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include /usr/lib64. Jacob Salomon confirmed this fixed it.

Hi Art,
shouldn't libgsk8iccs_64.so belong to GSKit and be searched under /usr/lib64 instead - but since oninit can't find it, it appears GSKit hasn't been installed.
The 14.10.FC9 I'm looking at brought a GSKit (installables under $INFORMIXDIR/gskit) and the installer automatically installed it (since it was newer than the previously installed version.)
Did the installer ask you whether you want to use GSKit or prefer using OpenSSL?

I had responded with GSKIT. But, I noticed after posting that FC8 was getting the same error on startup from oninit also FC9 does start anyway. Probably because I'm not actually doing any encryption here.

Hello Art, I had similar problem with 14.10.FC8 on AIX - In my case, AIX security did nor allow to change gskit binaries - therefore gskit installation failed - see $INFORMIXDIR/tmp/gskit.log at your site for possible reasons. After I removed restriction and install gskit manually, it was successful and oninit started well.

Thanks Milan. It turns out that RPM didn't install properly so GSKIT did not install with the CSDK. Thanks for pointing me at the gskit.log the message in there was how I figured it out. So, I had fixed the RPM problem yesterday and so just had to reinstall CSDK to get the GSKIT installed finally. I had to completely rebuild my laptop OS last week after I screwed it up manually installing an update to a package and am still reinstalling some things that I missed in my frantic rush to get it working again. Hi Hrvoje,
libisi is an Informix library acting as a wrapper around crypto and other functions provided by GSKit or OpenSSL and providing a unified interface to Informix utilities. It comes in currently four flavors:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 142096 Oct 24 09:20 libisi_gsk.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 214480 Oct 24 09:16 libisi_o10.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 218152 Oct 24 09:16 libisi_o11.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 218024 Oct 24 09:16 libisi_oos.so.2.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Oct 24 09:20 libisi.so.2 -> ./libisi_gsk.so.2.2
First one for GSKit, next three ones for different versions of OpenSSL.
What Informix expects is libisi.so.2 (last one) which would be pointing to one of the real libs, depending on your choice at install time.
So none of them is part of GSKit, it all comes with the Informix installation.
What this thread originally was about is a missing libgsk8iccs_64.so, indicating a missing GSKit installation.
If you've pointed libisi.so.2 to libisi_gsk.so.2.2 and run 'ldd $INFORMIXDIR/lib/libisi.so.2', or if you do an 'ldd libisi_gsk.so.2.2', with GSKit present on the system, you'll see:
$ ldd libisi.so.2
linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007ffd9ad55000)

libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00007f36d9389000)
libgsk8sys_64.so => /usr/lib64/libgsk8sys_64.so (0x00007f36d9287000)With GSKit not present on the system, all those " => /lib64/libgsk*" resolutions would be missing and the library could not work.
You'd either have to install GSKit or go for OpenSSL (currently to be used mainly for clients, that might not all have GSKit installed, if I'm right.)

Yes Andreas, that is one problem (link not created) "solved" - can't expect customer to create links by hand. But other problem (missing deb installation files) is also major problem Hrvoje ------------------------------ Hrvoje Zokovic ------------------------------
Apparently GSKit on Linux only comes with .rpm files now, even from IBM GSKit download site. ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------
So something here is contradictory since machine notes for Linux x86_64 (https://ibm.co/3WWEEFg) states: For GSKit: The RPM or Debian Package Manager is required to be installed on the system. And for ids: This product has been certified on: - Ubuntu Server Edition 16.04 LTS (Kernel: 4.4.0-142, Glibc: 2.23). - Ubuntu Server Edition 17.10 (Kernel: 4.13.0-21, Glibc: 2.26). - Ubuntu Server Edition 18.04 LTS (Kernel: 4.15, Glibc: 2.27). - Ubuntu Server Edition 20.04 LTS (Kernel: 5.4.0, Glibc: 2.31). It can be installed but not as usual out of the box and that is sth customers do not like. Hrvoje ------------------------------ Hrvoje Zokovic ------------------------------

Isn't the missing link simply the consequence of missing GSKit? I'd assume the installer checks for availability before creating such link... ------------------------------ Andreas Legner ------------------------------
I think that missing link IS tied to missing deb files. But file (original file to which link is created) exists: drwxr-xr-x 2 informix informix 4096 Nov 15 13:17 csm -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 18424 Oct 3 21:05 ipldd11a.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 890094 Oct 3 20:44 libAPI.jar -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 197848 Oct 3 21:05 libastool.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 13536 Oct 3 21:09 libbsanull.so -r-xr-xr-x 1 informix informix 2281360 Oct 3 21:09 libbsapsm.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 432696 Oct 3 20:44 libcurlisi.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 11771016 Oct 3 21:08 libdwa.udr -rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 142096 Nov 15 13:17 libisi_gsk.so.2.2 -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 902520 Oct 3 20:44 libnativeAPI.so -r-xr-xr-x 1 informix informix 62024 Oct 3 21:09 libtxbsa.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 1014 Oct 3 21:07 libxml.jar -rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 24256920 Oct 3 21:07 libxml.udr -rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 12944 Oct 3 20:44 pam_mongo.so So IMHO link should be created anyway Hrvoje ------------------------------ Hrvoje Zokovic ------------------------------

Hi Hvroje, > But file (original file to which link is created) exists: > ... > So IMHO link should be created anyway. Well, not really. Before creating the link, there is a check, whether the target library (libisi_gsk.so.2.2 in your case) is usable. With GSKit installation missing, libisi_gsk.so.2.2 is not usable and therefore the link is not created. Creating the link anyway would not help a lot in this case. For GSKit, there is (so far) only one ISI library, libisi_gsk.so.2.2, so the result (immediately) is that no link gets created. But the general idea (of the install procedure) is, if one ISI library is not usable (because the needed security libs are not available), then try the next ISI library. This works better for OpenSSL, as for OpenSSL there are several ISI libraries. So the installer would e.g. first try the ISI library for OpenSSL 1.1. If that fails, it can try the ISI library for OpenSSL 1.0. More ISI library will get added for different, binary incompatible, versions of security libraries like OpenSSL, GSKit, and maybe some more. Hi Martin, I can agree with that logic - but then, why do you install .lds_license file (i.e. license installer) when you can't read (decrypt) license file? Following logic you explained would skip license installer. Regards, Hrvoje ------------------------------ Hrvoje Zokovic ------------------------------
For me this was finally resolved by installing RPM then reinstalling the CSDK. It certainly would be nicer if there were a .deb file included for Debian based systems. I run Ubuntu/Kubuntu Art ------------------------------ Art S. Kagel, President and Principal Consultant ASK Database Management Corp. www.askdbmgt.com ------------------------------
Art, support provided me download of both tar files including deb packages. So after IDS installation (or CSDK) you can install gskit from that directory (ofc after copying downloaded tar files). I'm sure you can ask them for "patched" tar files. According to support - it will be resolved in C10. Still, you'll have to create link (mentioned above) by hand. There is a down side to actually having a job: I don't have a lot of time to finish installing my Informix stuff. (I'd rather have the job, of course; not the starving artist type. <grin>)
Well, I have installed it and created a reasonable (IMHO) ONCONFIG and SQLHOSTS file, as well as appropriate entries in /etc/services. I don't want to install the CSDK until I can at least run dbaccess and dbaccessdemo. I had downloaded release ids.14.10.FC10 on my Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu).

Jacob,
Here's what my system shows:
$ cd /opt/ibm/informix/ids14.10.FC10DE/lib
$ ls -l libisi*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 19 Mar 18 05:26 libisi.so.2 -> ./libisi_gsk.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root informix 142096 Mar 18 04:59 libisi_gsk.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 214480 Mar 18 05:26 libisi_o10.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 218152 Mar 18 05:26 libisi_o11.so.2.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 informix informix 218024 Mar 18 05:26 libisi_oos.so.2.2As Paul said it should be a symlink to one of the gskit libraries,
libisi_gsk.so.2.2 in this case.
Since you are on a Ubuntu/Debian based system, see if the gskit
packages were installed:
$ dpkg -l | grep 'gsk'That's a lowercase 'L' flag. It should return something like
gskcrypt64 and gskssl64 with some version info. These should have
been installed during the Informix installation.
I'm on 64-bit Slackware and although it doesn't use RPM to manage
packages, since I had the rpm command installed, when I installed
Informix, it installed these two RPM packages automatically:
gskssl64-8.0-55.26.x86_64
gskcrypt64-8.0-55.26.x86_64
The files were installed under /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64.
Check if you have that directory. If so, gskit should be installed.
If not, you should have a directory "gskit" under your Informix
install location, e.g. /ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/gskit.
On my system here's what it contains:
$ pwd
/opt/ibm/informix/ids14.10.FC10DE/gskit
$ ls -ltotal 20316
-rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 2696 Mar 7 17:53 README
-rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 3921920 Mar 7 17:51 gskcrypt64-8.0.55.26a.linux.x86_64.tar
-rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 16865280 Mar 7 17:51 gskssl64-8.0.55.26a.linux.x86_64.tar
-rwxr--r-- 1 root informix 6711 Mar 7 19:38 installgskit
You should be able to run the installgskit script as root.
If that does not work, you can extract .deb packages from each
of the tarballs and use "dpkg -i" to install them.

Jacob: As Scott and Paul pointed out, you have to link libisi.so.2 to either the GSK library or the SSL library depending on what you chose to use during server installation. It looks like you got gskit installed but something else is still missing.
Did you look in /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64? Are the actual files there?
Something else, on my system the install created a bunch of
symlinks in /usr/lib64 that point to the files in /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64.
Do you have these symlinks in /usr/lib64? Debian-based systems might
put them somewhere else, maybe /usr/lib? Not sure.

informix@maxwell2l:/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib$ ls -l libisi.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 42 Jul 4 11:02 libisi.so.2 -> /ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib/libisi_gsk.so.2.2
That is the full path name of the target library file. My first run of ldd; it looks quite like your output, Paul:
informix@maxwell2l:~$ ldd $(which oninit)
linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fff313d2000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0x00007f7b646ad000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0x00007f7b646a8000)

libcap-ng.so.0 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcap-ng.so.0 (0x00007f7b6408f000)
Notice anything missing? I see no mention of the allegedly missing library,
/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib/libisi.so.2
That was mystery[1]. Perhaps, however, it is loaded at run time rather than being linked in at "ld" time. (Also, is there any significance to
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
?)
Now for mystery [2]: Another run o oninit -t.
informix@maxwell2l:/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib$ oninit -t | head -2
cannot load library /ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib/libisi.so
libgsk8iccs_64.so: cannot open shared object file:
No such file or directory
HEY, a
different
error message! Now it finds the shared library but can't load it owing to another missing shared library.
Let's run ldd against our no-longer-missing shared library.
informix@maxwell2l:~$ ldd /ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib/libisi.so.2
linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fffb8881000)
libgsk8iccs_64.so => not found
libgsk8ssl_64.so => not found
libgsk8km_64.so => not found
libgsk8acmeidup_64.so => not found
libc.so.6 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0x00007f49d2bd8000)
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007f49d3075000)
That's mystery[3]: YIKES!! I am SOOOO MESSED UP HERE! 4 files that it depends on are not found! And neither Synaptec package manager nor the Linux Mint software manager mention these gsk sources.
Now Scot asked another vital question:
>
Did you look in /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64? Are the actual files there?
Let's have a look, after again running installgskit (yes, as root)
informix@maxwell2l:/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib$ ls -ld /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/*
drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 4096
Jul 4 11:49
/usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/bin
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root sys 211 Oct 8 2021 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/copyright
drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 4096 Oct 8 2021 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/docs
drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 4096 Oct 8 2021 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/inc
drwxr-xr-x 4 root sys 4096 Jul 4 11:49 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/lib64
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root sys 5616 Oct 8 2021 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/ReadMe.txt
Peeking into the bin I have:
informix@maxwell2l:/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib$ ls -ld /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/bin/*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root sys 14954640 Oct 8 2021 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/bin/gsk8capicmd_64
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root sys 9792 Oct 8 2021 /usr/local/ibm/gsk8_64/bin/gsk8ver_64
Scot also mentioned a bunch of symlinks created by installgskit. I got'em too, I won't print there here; no reason they should be different from Scot's output. And I ran the target .so files through ls -l so I know all do exist. More interesting: Scot's output has 13 files; mine has 14; I also have:
/usr/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 -> /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
Now that we know how messed up my installation is, how do I unmess up? (unmess down?)
This reminds me of the dentist looking in my mouth and proclaiming "What a Challenge!".
Finally, Art's suggestion about
LD_LIBRARY_PATH
: Currently it's not set. What would you suggest I set it to?
WHEW!! Grateful for the help here!

Jacob:
So, now that you have found all of the missing libraries, set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to a path list that includes the locations of those libs and export it. So, something like:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/lib64:/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu:
$INFORMIXDIR/lib:$INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql
and wherever else you need oninit to look for shared libraries.

I am happy to report that
THIS
issue has been solved.
Recall that when I did the ldd on /ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib/libisi.so.2 there were 4 .so file at it depended on that are not found:
libgsk8iccs_64.so => not found
libgsk8ssl_64.so => not found
libgsk8km_64.so => not found
libgsk8acmeidup_64.so => not found
Art suggested I do a massive find for these file names. I found them in
/usr/lib64
. As symlinks to elsewhere but it's what i needed.
I set up my env variable:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib:/usr/lib64. (The
/ifmx/ids.14.10.FC10/lib
was just for good measure; that part was working already anyway.)
I am now past that stage and have other, not surprising problem relating to Kernel parameters. I'll investigate that on the Linux Mint forum. But as far as I am concerned, the missing library issue is solved! HOOORAY for Scot, Paul & Art!
The LD_LIBRARY_PATH was only the second part of the solution; the first part was setting up:
$INFORMIXDIR/lib/libisi.so.2 -> $INFORMIXDIR/lib/libisi_gsk.so.2.2
In my case the full path was needed.
Thank you all!
