Does INFORMIX IDS 10 - 32 bit support memory > 2GB

Folks, I have some questions about IDS 10. 1. Does INFORMIX IDS 10 - 32 bit support shared memory > 2GB? If so, what is the upper limit? If not, does the 64 bit IDS 10.0 support shared memeory > 2GB 2. Is a migration from 7.31.UD6W5 to 64 bit IDS 10.0 possible or would an export/import be required. 3. Is there any documentation/white papaer that would tell me the differences between a 32 bit and 64 bit IDS 10.0 Thanks and all help appreciated. -- Rajiv Jhaveri _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Specifying Shared Memory Size Greater Than 4 GB You can now specify that segments for shared memory be created as large as your operating system platform or the SHMMAX parameter allows. NOTE: ON-Monitor does not support Shared Memory Size greater than 4GB. Therefore, the size specified for SHMVIRSIZE, SHMADD and SHMTOTAL in the "Shared-Memory screen" cannot be greater than 4GB. This feature is primarily documented in the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Administrator's Guide and IBM Informix Dynamic Server Administrator's Reference. > -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- > Von: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] Im > Auftrag von Rajiv Jhaveri > Gesendet: Freitag, 27. What platform? Solaris 8? Solaris 9? AIX 5.1? AIX 5.2?
1. The limit is around 4Gb for 32 bit binaries. Solaris is 3.75Gb AIX is
some crap 2.25Gb limit.
64 binaries allow a single instance to access more than whatever the limit
is for shared memory
access for 32 bit binaries on your platform. All 64bit Informix versions
support more than 4Gb
of shared memory. Unless there is a platform specific limit for shared
memory against 64 bit binaries
on your platform then the IDS 10 limit is 4Tb (4096Gb)!!
IDS 10 in a 64bit version support >4Gb of shared FOR AN INDIVIDUAL SHARED
MEMORY
SEGMENT. Again there may be a platform specific limit it depends on what is
Operating System
supports.
Check the release notes for IDS 10 under
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp
2. In the Migration Guide
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.mi
g.doc/mig29.htm
"If you have Dynamic Server Version 9.40, 9.30, 9.2x, 7.3x, or 7.24, you can
migrate directly to
Dynamic Server Version 10.0, the current database server."
so yes you can migration straight to IDS 10.
3. I'm not sure. In the release notes above there is a section called
"Limits in IBM Informix Dynamic
Server). The only limit listed there is the shared memory limit (and it is
not 2Gb on Solaris 8 for 32bit Informix versions
as I have a system with 3Gb of shared memory that is 32 bit!
In
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.ad
ref.doc/adref32.htm
there are different limits for some configuration parameters. E.g. Under
bufferpools the lrus limit is
32-bit platforms: 1 through 128
64-bit platforms: 1 through 512
and the buffers limit is :-
For 32-bit platform on UNIX:
with page size equal to 2048 bytes:
100 through 1,843,200 buffers
(1843200 = 1800 * 1024)
with page size equal to 4096 bytes:
100 through 921,600 buffers
(921,600 = ((1800 * 1024)/4096) * 2048 )
For 32-bit platform on Windows:
100 through 524,288 buffers (524,288 = 512 * 1024)
For 64-bit platforms: 100 through 231-1 buffers
(For the actual value for your 64-bit platform, see your machine notes. The
maximum number of buffers on Solaris is 536,870,912.)
DS_TOTAL_MEMORYMaximum value for 32-bit platform:
2 gigabytes
Maximum value for 64-bit platform:
4 gigabytes
SHMVIRTSIZE
32-bit platforms:
Positive integer with a maximum value of
2 gigabytes
64-bit platforms:
Positive integer with a maximum value of
4 terabytes
The maximum value might be less on some platforms due to operating-system
limitations. For the actual maximum value for your UNIX platform, see the
machine notes.
David.

David,
Thank you for your response.
The plan is to migrate from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 and from
IDS7.31.UD6W5 (32 bit) to IDS10.0 (64 bit).
Sorry, I should have provided the machine specific information in the
original e-mail.
