RE: SET EXPLAIN: Error -534
Posted in 2000
A user on IDS 7.30.UC2 with 4GL got error -534 "Cannot open EXPLAIN output file / Not owner" whenever SET EXPLAIN ON was issued, from both the 4GL program and dbaccess; it worked on another 7.23 instance and when logged in as user informix. Suggestions about directory permissions and deleting stale sqexplain.out files didn't help (the directory was world-writable). The fix came from a tip that the behaviour depends on who starts the engine: starting the instance as user informix rather than root made SET EXPLAIN work. A follow-up argued the real cause is wrong ownership/setuid bits on oninit, which should be -rwsr-sr-- root:informix.

Before you buy.
I can't remember where 'sqexplain.out' goes to. Is it users current or
home directory...
Perhaps one already exists in whatever directory, but it was created by
someone else, so it won't let you append to it.
kick off:
find / -name sqexplain.out -ls
and delete whichever ones it finds in the hope that this will resolve
the problem!
Good luck.

Before you buy.
-Current directory has "drwxrwxrwx" permissions. So I don't think that
would be the problem. Also, this used to work.
-And I don't remember changing anything. Haven't messed with
permissions on the Informix binaries.
-I don't have a temp dbspace set, as someone suggested. So I guess I'll
have to try that.
- I also tried a) removing sqexplain.out and b) creating a zero-length
file with "-rwxrwxrwx" permissions.
-SET EXPLAIN does work when I'm user 'informix', though.
Sorry about cramming all my replies here. I use deja.com from work and
I don't have the news reader interface that sorts message threads.
Every reply seems to be a new post in deja, although one can view the

And you would be absolutely correct, Sir. Don't ask me why. I really don't know. But it works when the database is started as user 'informix'. Thank you. I love you guys. The power of the Internet. This is not good solution. SET EXPLAIN (and everything else) must work in the
same way when root strats engine. I think the reason is in ownership of ONINIT
file. So:
ls -l oninit
have to produce:
-rwsr-sr-- 1 root informix 4654164 Oct 24 1997 oninit
