hi there,
we are using ontape to do our level 0 backup daily.
one of the user accidently deleted few thousand
records in a table resite in a dbspace.
How do i restore the data since i have the yesterday
level 0 backup tape. Restoring the whole dbspace is
not logical because there are some modification of
some other tables on the same dbspace which I don't
want to over write
What am I doing now is create a new server on dev.
machine and create only the dbspace that I want to
restore. Can I just restore only the dbspace on this
new server ontape -r D <dbspacename> ? and
then retrieve the records out via unload command and
then load them back to the live server.
Any better and more efficient way ?
Your advise will be appreciated.
Thanks

Basically the level-0 backup is an all or nothing proposition. You can't
selectively restore tables (The way you'd like to). There is a tool called
ARCUNLOAD on the IIUG web site that states that it 'might' be able to
extract a single table from a Level-0 backup. I tried to use it and managed
to corrupt by DB system catalog (Which the disclaimer clearly indicates
could occur).
Since then I've found that the best way to accomplish a partial restore from
a level-0 backup is to create a 'mirror' server and restore the backup to
it. Once it's been restored, you can use an unload/load technique to recover
data for your production server. This will only work however if your
production and 'mirror' servers are setup exactly alike. (Same Informix
version, DBSPACE names, ONCONFIG, etc..)
Note: I'm on IDS 7.20.
Good Luck!
