INSERTing string longer the 256 bytes

Perhaps I'm missing something, but when trying to insert a string value of greater than 256 bytes, Informix generates an error -280 (A quoted string exceeds 256 bytes). I understand the error, but not the restriction. For Pete's sake, even MS Access allows this!! Is there a decent workaround for this complete design failure on Informix's part? Thanks

If you're using DB-Access, the answer's No (unless there's something in 9.20 I don't know about). There's been talk of allowing newlines in string literals, and they may also have added longer string literals. If you're using a programming language (ESQL/C, I4GL, D4GL, Perl and DBD::Informix, ...), then you use a placeholder or variable to supply the value -- then you're limited to 32767 bytes. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.95 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
Use the datatype TEXT.
