I am aware of 2 variables that you can set for KAIO -
examples:
export KAIOON=1
export IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ=5000
Have a look at the release notes (and the manuals?)
These are for the engine and not the sessions.

I've never heard of a KAIO environment variable. Kernel IO is engine based,
not session based. In other words it is the engine that would use such an
environment variable not a session. Set whatever the variable is before you
boot your engine. There is a variable that is close to "KAIO" that is
KAIOOFF. if you export KAIOOFF=1 before booting your engine (not sure if
this holds true for 7.x and 9.x but it does for 8.x), then your engine will
use AIO instead of KAIO.
cheers
