IDS under RedHat Linux with a onsoctcp listener ne
Posted in 2009
IDS 10 on RHEL 4 started fine with one onsoctcp listener, but adding more DBSERVERALIASES failed with "Network driver cannot bind a name to the port" (error -25572, oserr 13). The aliases used ports 1001-1007; netstat showed nothing listening there. The cause was that ports below 1024 are privileged and the engine's listener threads run as user informix, not root, so bind was denied (permission, not a conflict). Moving the aliases to ports 1531-1537 fixed it; running listeners on NET VPs was also mentioned as an alternative.

Good afternoon,
I could use some advice with IDS under RedHat Linux with a onsoctcp listener
network binding problem / error.
I'm testing IDS 10.00.FC9 under RedHat Linux AS 4.8. I have multiple tcp ports
I use with onsoctcp listeners. IDS seems to start just fine with a single
onsoctcp listener. However, I as soon as I try to add another, the IDS engine
won't start and complains " Network driver cannot bind a name to the port".
There's not much out there for this error on IBM site, nor with a Google
search for that error message.

When I have only one DBSERVERLIASES with 'cxdb3' then IDS starts up just fine.
As soon as I add another alias like 'coistarcars' or any other, IDS fails to

If you have any knowledge of this issue under Linux, I would be very grateful
for any insight.

What happens if you use port 1531 for: coistarcars onsoctcp
cxdb3.cx.claremont.edu 1001?

Hi Art. Yes.. I did a netstat -an and piped that to more.. I didn't see any tcp listeners on those port. But that is a good point, tcp ports below 1024 are suspect. Unfortunately, it's a scheme I inherited from a previous DBA's design. Lots of Apps want to talk to IDS on those port. I'll try moving those port up +530 (1001 = 1531.. etc. etc.) I'll let you know shortly. Jonathan B. Port numbers less than 1024 are 'reserved' for well-known services (on all
species of Unix). You should normally aim to use port numbers larger than
1024, therefore. That said, root privileged processes are normally able to
use those ports, I thought - but errno = 13 is ENOPERM (Permission denied)
on Solaris and probably on Linux too.
I suppose that if the listeners are running in the only CPU VP and that is
running as user informix, then it would lack the privilege to open those
ports. You might be able to fix that by running the listeners on one or
more NET VPs, instead of on the CPU VP.
Anyway, I suggest changing your 1001..1007 numbers to a different range
(2001..2007, or 10001..10007) and try again.

As noted in my separate answer (still travelling, or only just arrived),
port numbers under 1024 are reserved and only a root-privileged process can
open them. You must have had the CPU VPs (which run as user informix, not
as user root) doing the listening. So it was not a question of the ports
being in use, but simply IDS did not have the privilege needed to use them.
Remapping the port numbers to values larger than 1023 should do the trick -
you confirmed that it does do the triwith this post.
