RSS not working
Posted in 2014
A user on IDS 11.50.FC9 couldn't bring up an RSS secondary: after an ontape level-0, shipping the archive over a WAN, restoring with ontape -p and connecting, the primary logged "Can not send log <n>" and sent no log pages. Madison Pruet pointed out the RSS start point is the archive checkpoint's log, and because the multi-day backup/copy/restore cycle plus clearing the log-backup directory let the logical logs wrap, that log was gone. The user confirmed a log wrap; adding more/larger logical logs (and keeping log backups) fixed it. Suggestions also included piping ontape backup straight into ontape -p over an IPC pipe, or using ifxclone.

Hello I have an interresting problem
I have 2 servers when they I do a level 0 backup on primary.
setup the RSS on Primary
Send the backup to my secondary run ontape -p.
connect the secondary to primary the primary sends this error
12:29:07 RSS Server drcastxliveca - state is now connected
12:29:08 Can not send log 82043
my logs start at
-rw-rw---- 1 informix informix 10420224 Oct 06 14:30 liveca_Log0000082044
I think what going on is that I'm creating a backup then flushing my logs
same problem on this server pair

I write my logs to a dir using ontape. after my backup completes I clean out
that dir.
Are you using RSS flow control? Are you running a bunch of onmode -l
commands as part of the backup?

The only reason that I can think of that might have caused this is if t=
he
network connection between the primary and the secondary was down for a=
n
extended period of time and a log wrap occurred.

Interesting the servers are on different subnets across an MPLS wan. And that
is the reason I used RSS
I have 2 thoughts
1. the L0 backup using ontape it seems that the log is missing and cannot be
sent from the primary,
I think I'll move the logs to another dir start the ontape L0 then delete the
old logs in the new dir.
2. Is the a number of Approximate Log Page Backlog too high is their a limit I
am hitting, should I use
RSS flow control currently the default sets it at 192/176 I not sure I
understand the dynamic of the flow control
It's more likely that a log wrap occurred from the time that you starte=
d
the backup on the primary and the time that you started the RSS server.=
You might want to check in the online log file to see if that occurred.=

their is a huge amount of time .
here are my steps,
1 backup L0
2 gzip the backup
3 copy the backup.gzip to rss server any where from 4 to 10 gigs over wan
could be 24 -48 hours
4 unzip on RSS server
5 ontape -p
6 then onmode -d RSS command
this could take a min 2 to 3 days.
during this time I have suspended backups on the Primary..
The backup checkpoint is done at the start of the backup. That checkpo=
int
is the RSS starting point. You need to see what log file that checkpoi=
nt
was done in and if the suspension of log backups was done before that l=
og
file was backed up.
If that log file was archived, then it is possible that it was overwrit=
ten
during the time that that it took to establish the RSS server.

Yep I think we are saying the same thing.
because I'm using ontape -c and my llog go to the tapedev after my bkp
finishes i clear my tapedev
I'm causing this.
AHH i get it my logs
so my llogdbs where my logs are
LOGFILES 102
LOGSIZE 10000
DYNAMIC_LOGS 0
LOGBUFF 64
which means that after I fill 1 gig they over write. its not reading from the
log backup TAPEDEV
so I add enough logs and dbs space to carry me till I startup the RSS its
reading from the llogsbds not the TAPEDEV and I'm messing up the tape dev
also, bc I am delete the dir after the backup finishes.
Oh tell me I got it because I'm banging my head on my desk and am likely to
pass out
You could speed up the process by combining some of the steps. Instead=
of
doing...
1 backup L0
2 gzip the backup
3 copy the backup.gzip to rss server any where from 4 to 10 gigs over w=
an
could be 24 -48 hours
4 unzip on RSS server
5 ontape -p
6 then onmode -d RSS command
you could do
ontape -t -l0 | gzip > (an IPC pipe) > gunzip | ontape -p
If you use an IPC pipe between the two systems, you would be taking the=
backup and restoring at the same time.

Thank you I going to try this also I'm upgrading my wan backbone tonight from 10 meg to 30 meg ... I am still overwhelmed by the llog and not tapedev misconception I had. IPC pipe in Unix I look into that
Thank You all this is resolved It was a long warp issue adding logs to the ids worked RSS is flowing Thanks to all who helped out
Why not just use ifxclone? I may have missed an older version number or something but isn't that essentially what you're doing just in a long form? That will create the RSS server connections and everything for you. Run the clone while tailing the online.log grepping for (I'm going from memory) "server operational." and have it mail you when it's finished.
