HDR problem - ontape -p
Posted in 2005
A DBA setting up HDR on IDS 7.31 ran a level-0 ontape backup on the primary and ontape -p on the secondary, but the physical restore appeared to hang (server stuck in Fast Recovery/Blocked:CKPT), and he asked whether to answer N to the "take logical backup?" prompt, how long the restore should take, and what state the secondary should end in. Replies confirmed answering N is correct, outlined the proper primary/secondary sequence (ontape -s -L 0, onmode -d primary/secondary, ontape -p then ontape -l), noted the restore can take as long as or longer than the backup, and that the secondary stays in Recovery/read-only mode. The poster later found the cause: stale/leftover entries in his services and sqlhosts files were confusing the setup.

I want answers to the following questions :-
1] When I do ontape -p , it does ask me "take logical backup [Y/N] ?"
What should I do ?
I gave "N" and proceeded with the cold restore.
Is the above right action ?
Yes, that's right you do not want to perform a logical restore as you want
to completely wipe the secondary database and replace it with the primary.
2] Why doesnt the restore complete ?
I assume you did the following:
1. Ran ontape -s -L 0 on the primary
2. Ran onmode -d primary <secondary server name> on the secondary
3. Did either of the following:
- Copied across the Database backup created in step 1 from the primary
to the secondary.
- On the secondary, the TAPEDEV parameter is pointing to the database backup
created in step 1.
You should send on your onconfig file (onstat -c).
3] The level-0 backup on primary takes around 10 hours , should the restore
take more than that or how much time should the "ontape -p" run ?
10 hours see
1]
When I do ontape -p , it does ask me "take logical backup [Y/N] ?"
What should I do ?
answer No.
This means that your secondary server has been initialised and has some
logs that are not been backuped. Your secondary server may be new, without
a first initialisation. We do a complete restore, don't we ?
2] Why doesnt the restore complete ? Have you wait enough time ? do you see
disk activity with iostat or something else ?
I have made 2 litte informixservers and constructs HDR between them. So i
knew which behaviour and messages to expect.
3] The level-0 backup on primary takes around 10 hours , should the restore
take more than that or how much time should the "ontape -p" run ?
Almost more, if both servers have the same hardware and same applications.
My experience :the restore of the logs take a long, long time.
4] When it does complete, whats should be the status of the informix server
i.e. "onstat - " should show what output ?
After completion the secondary server will always stays in Recovery Mode
(Read Only). I'm not so sure from the "Read Only" in the banner.
I've tested HDR in informix7.3 as follows :
on primary :
ontape -s -L 0
onmode -d primary g_oebarrep # set as primary
on secondary :
ontape -p (in log file : Recovery mode)
onmode -d secondary g_oebar (in log : DR: Start failure recover from
tape)
ontape -lrollforward should start at log 6
another tape : N
(in log DR: in log failure recover from disk)
the secondary log files :

Subject: HDR problem - ontape -p [5257]
1] When I do ontape -p , it does ask me "take logical backup [Y/N] ?"
What should I do ?
I gave "N" and proceeded with the cold restore.
Is the above right action ?
2] Why doesnt the restore complete ?
3] The level-0 backup on primary takes around 10 hours , should the restore
take more than that or how much time should the "ontape -p" run ?
4] When it does complete, whats should be the status of the informix server
i.e. "onstat - " should show what output ?
PLEASE give the answers pointwise .
Thanks in advance for ur help/suggestions ...
Regards,
Sagar

1] When I do ontape -p , it does ask me "take logical backup [Y/N] ?"

answer No.
This means that your secondary server has been initialised and has
some
logs that are not been backuped. Your secondary server may be new,
without
a first initialisation. We do a complete restore, don't we ?
2] Why doesnt the restore complete ? Have you wait enough time ? do you
see
disk activity with iostat or something else ?
I have made 2 litte informixservers and constructs HDR between them.
So i
knew which behaviour and messages to expect.
3] The level-0 backup on primary takes around 10 hours , should the
restore
take more than that or how much time should the "ontape -p" run ?
Almost more, if both servers have the same hardware and same
applications.
My experience :the restore of the logs take a long, long time.
4] When it does complete, whats should be the status of the informix
server
14:48:29 Event alarms enabled. ALARMPROG =
'/usr/informix/etc/no_log.sh'
14:48:29 VP pid=41056 priority fixed at 65, former = 65

Guys, first, thanks for your help . It gave me directions. The problem was services/sqlhost file already had some "dead" entries which caused confusion [shouldn't happen in a virgin/textbook cases] .
