A user asked whether to enable KAIO (kernel asynchronous I/O) with Informix 7.31.FD2 on HP-UX 11.0, and wanted performance/sizing data. Respondents said "just do it": one reported roughly 30% better batch throughput on HP-UX 10.20/IDS 7.31 (and later 11i/IDS 9.30), plus the benefit of not having to tune/manage AIO VPs. Another noted that KAIO's bad reputation came from specific older combinations (e.g. IDS 9.21 on HP-UX 10.20) suspected of causing assert failures. A link to the Informix FAQ (smooth1.demon.co.uk, section 6.20) covering the Informix/HP KAIO history was given as further reading.

Look for the bit starting...
Here is the real story behind Informix/HP KAIO over the years...

Yup, what he said.
We're now on HP-UX 11i with IDS9.30 but have had HP10.20 for nnn years
on IDS7.31
and very early on found KAIO improved throughput on the batch work by
a good 30%
(this is largely OLTP with a smattering of warehousing due to
retention of old never-used data).

PS "JFDI": I worked, many years ago, in a defence-industry electronics
company where most projects were strictly controlled and even the
smallest change had to go through the usual (typically British)
anally-retentive gamut of meetings, justifications, procedures and the
rest of it. I managed (eventually) to bring attention to the bleeding
obvious fact that somethings can be done bypassing this route, and the
means to do this was eventually rubber-stamped into the procedures
with the name "Jobs For Direct Implementation". Manglement neve
twigged. So a small arm of General Dynamics in the UK now has "JFDI"
projects enshrined in their BS9000-approved documentation.

Plus, further to my earlier post, with KAIO you don't have the pain in
the a** of managing all the AIO VPs.

If I could dish out awards for this sort of thinking, I would. I'm proud to
know you!

I agree. I think the apprehension about kaio and HP-UX stems from some
combinations - IDS 9.21 and HP-UX 10.20 is one that comes to mind - where
kaio was suspected to cause some assert failures. UK Tech Support Wizard
