Can you resize a dbspace?
Posted in 2017
A user accidentally created logdbs and tmpdbs dbspaces far too small on an HDR secondary and asked how to resize them. Answers: temp dbspaces can simply be dropped and recreated (updating ONCONFIG); logical logs can be moved to a new, correctly sized dbspace via onparams -a/-d plus level-0 archives. Art Kagel noted the secondary's layout is built from the primary's definitions during the restore, so the user should just shut down the future secondary and restore the primary with ontape/onbar/ifxclone. The thread then drifts into a separate question about a seemingly stalled ontape HDR backup/restore, with advice to monitor progress via onstat -D, onstat -g ath/stk and the 'Physical Restore Completed' message; no outcome is recorded for that part.
Auto-generated by DrWatson from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.

I am working on a dev server for HDR, and on the secondary, I made a mistake
with the size of both the logdbs and tmpdbs. I just made them, and haven't
done anything else so no information is on there yet.
Am I able to somehow redo them to the correct size?
This is what I did
onspaces -c -d logdbs -p $INFORMIXCHUNKS/logdbs -o 0 -s 20000
and I wanted
onspaces -c -d logdbs -p $INFORMIXCHUNKS/logdbs -o 0 -s 200000
Same with tmpdbs
onspaces -c -d tmpdbs -t -p $INFORMIXCHUNKS/tmpdbs -o 0 -s 20000
and I wanted
onspaces -c -d tmpdbs -t -p $INFORMIXCHUNKS/tmpdbs -o 0 -s 200000
A tmpdbs can simply be dropped and you can create a new one with the correct
size.
Just remember you have to list the new tmpdbs in onconfig, otherwise it will
not be used.
Use the onspaces utility to create/drop a temp dbspace.
A LogDBS is also simple to replace, even online.
Create a new DBS with the correct size and use the onparams (onparams -a -d)
utility to create new logfiles
in the new DBS. After that (and a Level 0 Archive), you can delete the old
logs also with onparams (onparams -d -l logno).
At the end, the old logdbs should be free and can be dropped. (requires a new
L0 Archive, since a restore
would fail without the original logdbs)
Good luck,

When you restore the secondary to establish it that will build all of the
chunk-dbspace infrastructure from tge definitions in the primary. You do
not build an instance on the secondary.

Oh, I didn't realize that. So will it still work with what I have or do I need to delete anything?
Ok, thanks. I thought that was the case.
Just shutdown the fiture secondary then use ontape, onbar, or ifxclone to
restore a copy of the primary to the secondary.

I am using the HDR scripts, ontape_HDR_backup.ksh as well as its counterpart
on the secondary server. It has been running for 20 hours, and a sar on the
secondary shows 99-100% idle. Is there anyway to check the progress or to even
see if it is making progress?
The primary shows that the backup was started 20 hours ago, and the ontape is
still running. The secondary shows that the ontape -p is also running on it.
On the secondary, the online.log shows the server starting up at the same time
the archive began on the primary. There were a few quick checkpoints and then
nothing for about 14 hours. After the 14 hours there were 2 checkpoints and 2
Checkpoint Statistics and then nothing.
Larry
Also, I changed the script to be started from the secondary to "pull" the data
rather than having the primary "push" it.

On the secondary you can run "onstat -D" and see which chunks have already
been written out. The restore restores one dbspaces at a time in dbsnum
order writting to all chunks in each dbspace before moving on to the next
dbspace. So, you can tell how far the restore has progressed. Note that
the number of pages that will be written to each chunk will be roughly the
number of used pages in that chunk (from onstat -d) plus a few pages for
the physical log pages that overwrite pages modified during the archive to
return them to their condition as of the beginning of the archive.

Should an onstat -D show exactly the same results on both the primary and the
secondary?
Also, I am just letting it overwrite a previous copy of the database. Do you
see any issues with this?

Finally, if it looks like all the chunks have been written to, even though the
page Wr does not match up to the primary; but the primary ontape is still
running (not looking like it is doing anything because both servers are idle)
is it safe to assume it just never completed? Is it possible to kill the
ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO on the primary side? I just think this should havecompleted 6 or 7 hours ago when I saw the last logs written to.

You to wait for ontape to complete and mark all chunks as ok, please check

Also check the thread stacks as per my previous email.

Depending on how you started this backup & restore using STDIO, it might=20
be perfectly expected that you've got to control-C it after it has=20
completed.
E.g. ontape -s -L 0 -F -t STDIO | ssh machine=5Fb ~/imp=5Frest.sh
with imp=5Frest.sh being:
#!/bin/bash
. set=5Fix=5Fenv
ontape -p -t STDIO
Question simply is: do you have a "Physical Restore of <space=5Flist>=20
Completed." message in online.log?

Finally, if it looks like all the chunks have been written to, even though =
the=20
page Wr does not match up to the primary; but the primary ontape is still=20
running (not looking like it is doing anything because both servers are=20

is it safe to assume it just never completed? Is it possible to kill the=20

On the secondary you can run "onstat -D" and see which chunks have already =
been written out. The restore restores one dbspaces at a time in dbsnum=20

Thank you, both of you. I can watch the final dbspaces filling with doing
onstat -D every so often and doing a diff on results. I was just worried thatnothing was happening.

Hi Andreas,
I tried the scenario below on a pair of CentOS VMs and did not need to
Control-C, under what circumstances do you need to Control-C?

The process finally completed after about 30 hours. I just needed to be
patient. I can't believe that the network is that slow, but I guess it is.

Larry,
Too late for this attempt but I quit using those scripts and now use the
following procedure to swap primary/secondary.
Old primary Old secondary
testaix05 ibm622
inf_ace_test inf_ace_test_622
on testaix05
onmode -ky
on ibm622
onmode -d make primary inf_ace_test_622
on testaix05
oninit -PHY
onmode -d secondary inf_ace_test_622
on ibm622
onmode -d primary inf_ace_test
New primary New secondary
ibm622 testaix05

Steps were repeated with names transversed to put them back to original setup.

The secondary was blocking the checkpoint of the primary. Apparently, someone
unplugged a network cable in the middle of the final logical log download to
the secondary. This caused the secondary to be in a bad state. I had Support
log in and see if they could fix it, but alas they couldn't. Now my new
primary is up, but I am going through the 30 hour process of restarting
replication to the corrupt secondary.
Such is life.
Thanks to all those who helped.

If your ntwk sucks then take a level 0 from primary, zip it, transfer over
secondary, restore, it may be faster?
